Join us for an evening with Belarminia Ortiz, Ret. DOI Investigator + Certified Life Coach
Ms. Ortiz’s career in law enforcement spanned 25 years during which time she served as an investigator for New York City Department of Investigation (DOI). The DOI is the City’s Inspector General, with independent oversight of City government. Their investigations may involve any agency, officer, elected official or employee of the City, as well as those who do business with or receive benefits from the City. She is currently retired and entering the next phase of her life as. Life Coach and Reiki Practitioner. Her passion is to assist others in their healing and growth journeys.
Retired DOI investigator Belarminia Ortiz will discuss smuggling, contraband sales, fight clubs, and all sorts of misconduct happening inside the prison walls. The conversation will be moderated by SinC NY member, Jacquetta Szathmari. Ms. Szathmari is a writer and educator currently working on a mystery trilogy with a bomb scene investigator as the lead.
Cozy mystery sales surged in 2021 with more readers than ever hungry for wit, kindness, and the odd brownie recipe. This past year saw the creation of the Lilian Jackson Braun Award, a $2000 prize to be given to the best contemporary cozy of the year. In this panel, three exciting new voices in cozy mysteries—Zac Bissonette, Sarah E. Burr, and Allison Montclair—talk about their own unique spin on the sub-genre; what inspires them, what challenges them, and what the present and future market of this intensely popular form looks like. Mariah Fredericks, a member of the Board and the Programming Committee, will moderate.

The renowned writing expert and psychoanalyst Bonnie Zindel will share best practices for getting back to the business of writing.
Bonnie, a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York, is a faculty member, supervisor, and training analyst at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies. A founding editor and Creative Literary Editor of Psychoanalytic Perspectives, she is the author of numerous articles on creativity. Bonnie has conducted writing groups for psychoanalysts for over twenty years and has run writing workshops at international conferences in Rome, Madrid, and San Francisco. The New York Times said, “She runs what may be the most nurturing writing group on the literary scene.” A playwright and novelist (HarperCollins, Viking Penguin, Bodley Head), Bonnie is a former member of the Actors Studio Playwrights Unit. She recently wrote a one-woman play based on the life of Simone de Beauvoir performed in New York.
