We are finally back at the Jefferson Market Library! Derringer Finalist (and chapter co-president) Nina Mansfield will moderate a panel that includes award winning authors Kathleen Marple Kalb, Richie Narvaez and Lori Robbins to discuss how to put your best foot forward when composing a short story submission. We’ll delve into the craft of writing short stories, and cover submission do’s and don’ts so that your anthology submission will have the best chance of being accepted.

Kathleen Marple Kalb (aka Nikki Knight) is an anchor/author/mom…not in that order. The Agatha- and Derringer-nominated author of short stories and novels, she’s also a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award-winning anchor on New York City's #1 weekend morning show at 1010 WINS Radio. Her work includes fourteen previous mysteries across four series, and more than three dozen short stories in top mystery magazines, anthologies, and online. Active in writers’ groups, she is a Marketing and Communications Liaison on the SinC Worldwide Board, and a past VP of NY/Tri-State SinC and the Short Mystery Fiction Society. She and her family live in a Connecticut house owned by a large calico cat.
Richie Narvaez is the award-winning author of two novels and two short story collections. He recently co-edited the anthology The Speculative Detective Agency Case Files of the Supernatural and Fantastic, and is completing the textbook Short Crime, Mystery, and Suspense Fiction: A Writer's Guide and Anthology, co-written with Art Taylor. A recipient of a Letras Boricuas Fellowship from the Mellon Foundation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund, he teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Lori Robbins is the Amazon bestselling author of the On Pointe and Master Class mystery series. She is an Agatha Award nominee and the recipient of three Silver Falchions, the Indie Award for Best Mystery, and a silver medal in the Daphne du Maurier Award for Mystery and Suspense. Short stories include “Leading Ladies,” which received Honorable Mention in the 2022 Best American Mystery and Suspense anthology. She helped organize the publication of our chapter’s latest anthology and edited the Mavens of Mayhem Empire State Crimes anthology, which will release in 2027. Lori blogs for Miss Demeanors (www.missdemeanors.com), and is an active member of Sisters n Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, and the Short Mystery Fiction Society. Nina Mansfield is a Derringer nominated author, playwright, actor and educator. She crafts off-beat, female-driven stories. She sticks quirky, high strung characters in unusual situations, and sometimes her writing takes a dark turn. Nina’s short mystery fiction has appeared in multiple anthologies and various publications including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine. Her ten-minute and one-act plays have had over 150 productions throughout the United States and internationally. Her plays are published by Smith & Kraus, YouthPLAYS, Original Works Publishing and One Act Play Depot. Most recently, her full-length adaptation of Antigone was published by Stage Partners, and has received multiple productions. Nina is a member of The Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, the Theatre Artists Workshop of Connecticul, The Dramatists Guild, and she is a co-President of the NY/Tri-State Chapter of Sisters in Crime.
