Sept. Meeting: The Female of the Species

Deadlier than the male?  Different, for sure!

On Thursday, September 23rd, our chapter meeting’s speaker will be forensic profiler Dr. Kostas Katsavdakis.  Dr. Forensic is a psychology professor and consultant who’s going to highlight common myths and mistakes about the pathology of violent criminals.  Additionally, he’ll focus on why what we may think we know about male criminal behavior and motivation is dead wrong when dealing with the female of the species.

Chapter meetings at the Muhlenberg Library are open to the public, and we warmly invite you to come and to bring guests.  See logistical details at the 2010 Chapter Meetings link.

NYSinC at Brooklyn Book Festival!

This Sunday, our chapter will be participating in the Brooklyn Book Festival at booth #167– really a covered table– near the intersections of Adams and Joralemon Streets in the vendor areas by the cafe.

Do stop by!  We’ll have members making charming small talk and book bargains all day!

(NYSinC will also be tweeting whatever we can see from our camp chairs at #bkbf)

Members Talk Murder in Kips Bay

On Tuesday, September 14th, at 6:30pm, chapter members will participate in a panel discussion of Murder in Manhattan at the Kips Bay Library.  The event’s open to everyone who wants to find out what makes this small island such a perennial favorite for murder.

Special Events Mean Member Opportunities

Besides our chapter’s monthly gatherings (see sidebar for 2010 meetings), we now find ourselves involved in so many extra-meeting activities that they needed their own page!

To learn more about our upcoming participation in the Brooklyn Book Festival and the Astoria/LIC International Film Festival, visit our brand-new Special Events page, via the link or the menu item on the right sidebar, and save-those-dates!

Member News: Susan Dahlinger’s Fresh Sherlockiana

Member S.E. Dahlinger, with co-editor Leslie Klinger, has combed through the archives from notable illustrated journal The Bookman, published from 1895 to 1933.  The witticisms, reviews, letters, and commentary relating to the world’s greatest sleuth have been organized and annotated, and are now made available by an imprint of Wessex Books.  For many fans and scholars, this is a rich pool of fresh content, and the title’s receiving praise from no less than Otto Penzler and Jon Breen.  See Gasogene Books for more about SHERLOCK HOLMES, CONAN DOYLE, AND THE BOOKMAN. Congratulations, Susan, on discovering neglected historical content that’s making new waves in Sherlockiana!

Member News: Avery Aames’ Delicious Debut!

The debut mystery from our longest-distance chapter member Avery Aames (aka Daryl Wood Gerber) is now available everywhere!  THE LONG QUICHE GOODBYE is her first Cheese Shop Mystery with Berkley Prime Crime.  It’s in paper and e-book formats at your favorite bookseller.  Charlotte Bessette’s adventures begin when this small-town Ohio cheese seller finds a body outside her shop.  Worse yet, the victim’s been stabbed with one of her own prized knives.  Congratulations Avery on a great launch that proves murder and Manchego do go together!
